Spring is here and that means using windows of fair weather to get an early start on chores around the house, but when the rain comes, there are still things you can do! One of the most important is to replace the furnace filter.
There are really, really cheap paper filters that sell for as little as $2.50 – $3.00 each. These are generally crap. They don’t do a great job even when they are new, and they need to be replaced every 30 days. $30.00 – $36.00 a year for crap? Plus all that effort? Just say “No”. They can be made of paper or fiberglass.
There are also some really great filters, for some of the more modern furnaces, that do a much better job and only are supposed to be replaced every 12 months, like the Honeywell CF200A1620. It costs about $32.00 (plus sales tax) but it has a MERV rating of 12 (more is better) and you only replace it once each year. It’s a paper filter, with a wire grid to give it some electrostatic effect, but the wires are widely-spaced so that’s a limitation in addition to the fact that it’s four inches thick and only fits in Specific Honeywell units. What’s “electrostatic” mean? As air passes over the wire, it creates a static-electric charge that traps dirt dust, pollen, and so on. As Martha Stewart said when she got out of prison, “That’s a good thing”. High MERV rating (12), but expect a 40%-60% decrease in efficiency after six months.
A lot of my customers are very happy with the Web (brand name) filters I’ve installed for them. Why? Well, you have two layers of metal mesh with small gaps that are close together to create not one, but two electrostatic barriers. Between the two screens is a foam sheet that acts as an intermediate-stage barrier. The results are excellent, all things considered. MERV rating is 8. What makes this such a great choice it that you buy it once for about $20 and it should last five to seven years! That’s big savings! it comes in three sizes, but is adjustable (just cut to size, using a pair of garden-shears) so you get an excellent fit. The key here is that you wash it every three months. Do not use a garden hose just to pressure-wash it! That won’t get the job done at all. When you install the filter, put a piece of masking tape on the edge on this side facing the direction of incoming air. When it’s time to clean, spray both sides generously with a household cleaner like Simple Green or 409. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Now you can В use your garden hose to pressure-wash it in the opposite direction of the air-flow (remember the masking tape?). In exchange for 20 minutes effort every three months, you’ll have clean, fresh air all year long and save money too!
