There are some industrial/manufacturing sites along the route I drive to town most often. Ok, there are SOME sort of manu/industrial along EVERY route to town, but that's not the point. Of the manus in the area when I moved in, half of them are out of business or gone, leaving the buildings and facilities in place, but vacant or with 'For Sale' or 'For Lease' signs. One of these manu facilities - let's call it UFS - has been vacant for about five years now. Doesn't matter what they did or why they are no longer there, but the facilicty is a two-section, medium-industrial facility on a 12 acre wedge of land between a rail line and a spur (which services a plastics facility next to it). Layout is cone-and-block, front section the cone, rear area the block. Frontage is a power substation conversion block with two banks of transformers taking power from the high-voltage lines. Six story truncated cone off-center tower in the primary building, the rest of the building is mostly two-story level, with some outside cat-walks at spots and lots of steel doors. Enclosure is chain-link ten foot with double strand barbwire and crest spikes. Guard shack is brick and heavy glass, configured (when it was operational) for a two-man detail. Sixty-slot parking on frontage OUTSIDE the wire, ten-slot INSIDE the wire to rear right (guess it was for bosses or other better-than-you types). When operational, the grass was cut weekly and the shrugs and landscaping was maintained properly. Initially, after the shut down, the landscaping was done about once a month. Then every other month, and for the last year or more maybe once a year. Power was, of course shut down when the plant closed, and has been off ever since. Now, the shrubs have compromised the fence's protective ability, and the untended landscaping creates a lot of dead spots from casual observation. A few weeks ago, I noticed a bright, shiny new heavy-gauge chain and security lock on the gate. Really stands out when...
