THE HAITI BUS
The idea sprung on the Grass Roots United team that getting a school bus donated would be the perfect solution as it acts as a potential shipping container, storage unit, a vehicle large enough to transport our volunteers & reconstruction tools/materials. Our communtiy within Burners without Borders(BWB) in Reno kindly donated the money from their fundraiser to purchase a 60 person school bus, a 1988 Chevy, retired Buncombe County School Bus Number 404. Grassroots United (GRU) is the product of years of experience addressing the humanitarian needs following natural disasters. Beginning in 2004 our core members began gaining on the ground experience and molding an organization that answers the needs of affected populations worldwide. In response to the horrifying Haitian earthquake of 2010, Grassroots United was officially born.
GRU is a platform that unites governmental agencies and NGOs, thus streamlining the effective allocation of volunteers and resources to those most in need. Through collaborative efforts, GRU responds to the immediate need while formulating a long-term recovery model that provides sustainable social and economical benefits to the local population.
Currently, we are deployed and fulfilling our mission in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2007 Peru earthquake. These two projects demonstrate our commitment to immediate response and the ability to unite organizations around a sustainable future.
