Dinner disappointment..
CLI and I went out for dinner last night, he had booked a place we have not tried before being all spontaneous like. The place was nice enough (I had actually been before but when it had a different name and owners) the frilly edged napkins were not the fashion statement that the owner hoped they would be, but they did make me giggle.
The waiter was lovely and had very nice teeth, the wine was good. Just everything else was pants. The restaurant is above a nightclub, this would not normally be a problem for a 7:30 reservation but they decided to test the sound system, by putting the bass up as high as it would go. Now I quite like the sensation of sitting on the washing machine during the spin cycle, just not when I am eating dinner. Fortunately it didn’t last for long and was a bit of a giggle. I think we and the other diners were giggling out of relief more than anything…
The starter was a sharing platter. I am a fan of the sharing platters, it saves me the bother of having to decide what I want, you just get bits of everything. It was oddly oriental for a restaurant called Latinos that boasts of it’s Mediterranean cuisine….
Teriyaki beef and chicken skewers, spring rolls, satay king prawn, Thai chicken lollipop. I did consider asking which specific part of the Med had influenced the chef when he planned the menu and then when I tasted the food the answer became clear. It was the Med itself, that and that alone could be the onlyВ answer. Certainly the saline levels in the food matched those of the Med. It was tongue tingling, mouth dryingly bad. However I was starving so I ate it, swilled down with the best part of half a bottle of wine.
For the main course we both ordered the specialty of the house, this time the more obviously Mediterranean Seafood Broth served with aioli and toast.В It arrived with bread rather than toast and we ordered a side of chunky chips too.
The broth arrived and it looked delicious, the first taste was promising and then I actually ate some seafood. 10 minutes later I was still eating it, the same piece. It was so overcooked, probably because apart from the clams and the one king prawn it was made from one of those hideous packets of assorted frozen seafood. It was not good. We ended up dipping the chips in the aioli which were great. The waiter could not apologise enough and we ended up only paying for the starters and the wine. One good thing that came out of it is that at one point CLI would have been really upset and it would have ruined the evening for him because he knows how little I get out, now he knows I can just laugh it off, go to the pub, drink more and have a cornetto for pudding.
