I just bought one and the instruction manual says before operation locate pre-filter in the box and install. But there is no pre filter in the box. Is the pre filter already installed in the unit?
I looked in side the units and there
Yes it is. It all depends on how its packaged- but a filter on a filter is a pre-filter.

Honeywell 50250 99.97 Pure Hepa Round Air Purifier Review
Honeywell was a computer company, long ago in the middle ages of computer history. Now they make high-end Air Purifiers. So how did they do? Generally, OK. The Honeywell name has a positive reputation for Air Purifiers and some of their higher-end units are highly regarded. They are rated very positively by Consumer Reports and others. This is reputed to be the only Air Purifier that can clean 375 square feet of space (it has a CADR rating of 250) for under $200.00. This unit retails for less than $160.00 on average. This is better than the Ionic Breeze and less costly. While not as powerful as higher-end Honeywell units, this is intended for the home market and it appears to do the job well.
One of the biggest values to this product is the permanent HEPAfilter. While cleaning can be an involved process the savings of nearly $100.00 annually is significant. So, does it work? In a word, yes. over 75% of customers report having a positive experience with the product, all claiming that it works well and is well built. The 50250 comes with a 5 year warranty and has a 360 degree air intake and output improving its circulation. There are a few often heard detractions from the product, chief among them is that its noisy, lacks style and has a higher power consumption than expected. But these are minor and over-all, Honeywell processes air as well as they used to process data.
These things do a pretty good job, it’s amazing how much dust and fur is on the pre-filter when I change it. This thing really pumps the air. The pre-filters are relatively inexpensive. The trade-off is noise, even on Low. It actually provides nice white noise for sleeping, and is good for times when you are not home, but when you are home and awake, trying to have a conversation, or watch TV, this filter is too loud. Would be nice if it had an “Ultra Low” setting
