A New Direction
The photo was that of the fretwork designed by William Gray Purcell for the Hoyt House of Red Wing Minnesota in 1913. The "sawed wood" as Purcell referred to it, was amazing in both its complexity as well as its organic form. I was immediately drawn to the intricacy and lightness of such a large piece, which is approximately 30" x 40".
It was after going back to the book for probably the 30th time that I had an A-ha! moment. Why not incorporate a similar style of fretwork into my own designs, particularly for the radiator covers. Not only could the fretwork add a design element unlike any other that I have attempted, but it would also set my designs apart from anyone else's. I figure that I could incorporate the fretwork in one of three ways; the first being on the end panels where they would replace a rather mundane and otherwise unadorned surface, while also allowing further heat transfer through the openings. The second would be to layer them on top of the solid end panels adding depth and intricacy. And finally the third way to utilize fretwork would be to replace the metal grilles that I typically employ in my designs. While the level of detail would be great and the amount of work necessary to cut the fretwork would be even greater, I look forward to incorporating my own ideas of "sawed wood" into the radiator cover designs. I feel that the covers would move from a mostly utilitarian or functional piece to that of a true work of art. The fretwork could serve to break up the typically straight-lined horizontal aspect of the covers and impart a flowing organic quality to each cover. In the design process I could look to the landscape for clues as to what and where I would incorporate into the fretwork. Furthermore, I could bring in an even greater amount of detail from the home into the design of the covers.
