Only 2 weeks left till I was concealed into the 1st grade. I wanted summer to last forever; but after that warm summer day, my life would never be the same. The waves were gently splashing against our boat and the sun was shinning just the way I like.

$135 million for THIS? … Your 2010 Chicago Cubs

Major League baseball’s 2010 season is finally here! In fact, Chan Ho Park and Marco Scutaro (two true legends of the game), are facing off in the latest chapter of the storied Yankees/Red Sox rivalry as I write this!* How AWESOME is that?

Anyway, I figured I’d break down the chances of my hometown Chicago Cubs in this space, as they prepare to open their 2010 season tomorrow afternoon. I’m doing this mainly to gather my own thoughts and make bold predictions about the team, and to have said thoughts recorded so I can see how ridiculous they look when the season ends. Here goes.

OFFENSE

The staggering failure of the Cubs’ offense was the primary cause of their fall from 97 game winner in 2008 to huge disappointment in ‘09. Ultra-reliable stud third baseman Aramis Ramirez went down with a rare injury early in the season, and the continued struggles of the team’s massively overpaid, shamefully constructed outfield pretty much sealed their fate. Plus, I’d say anytime your team’s starting catcher ( Geovany Soto ) turns out to be a fat stoner , it’s probably not a good sign.

But that was 2009! It’s fairly safe to say that this offensive group has nowhere to go but up. Ramirez should be back at full strength, and first baseman Derrek Lee is playing for a new contract, which bodes well for his chances to carry over at least some

The Cubs have a better shot at the playoffs than my above remarks would suggest, since they play in the tremendously weak National League Central division, in which they’re clearly one of the top two or three teams. The St. Louis Cardinals look strong, as they generally do as long as the ridiculous Albert Pujols is in the lineup. But St. Louis lacks rotation depth, meaning the Cubs (or the Reds or Brewers) could conceivably make a run.
