Greg Smith: Coming of Age and Making the Squad
As a middle schooler, I remember waiting not-so-patiently for our school’s basketball coach to post the 12-man roster. I was barely 5 foot 5, had the jumping ability of an armadillo and ran only a fraction faster than my 10-year old sister. But I had a glimmer of hope. Why am I telling you this story? Because it seems like every year some unexpected minor leaguer breaks through and makes the 25-man roster. This year, it appears the lucky, not-so-pimply prospect is Greg Smith.
Southpaw Smith was the third piece in the Holliday trade (actually, he was the second piece but some kids – i.e. Cargo – mature faster). Boasting a 1.50 spring E.R.A and 18/6 K’s to BB’s ratio, Greg has been one of the most pleasant surprises in Rockies camp.
While Smith was expected to start the year in AAA and pitch starters’ innings once every five days, Coloradorockies.com is reporting that Smith may be forcing Tracy’s hand. Joe Beimel may not be ready to start the year on the major league team; Justin Speier and Tim Redding have had some shaky stints; and Street is likely to miss even more time than expected, moving Franklin to the closer’s role and Flores to the lefty specialist slot. The Rox need a long reliever, and Smith’s arm is conditioned for that.
Smith also presents an intriguing option in the case of (heaven-forbid) injury or poor performance. I expect good things from all of the Rockies starters, but it’s not inconceivable for Francis to fail to regain his form, or for Jorge to regress into mental melt down mode.
I don’t know Greg, but I like him. He had an impressive rookie campaign with an American League ball club, and this spring, he has demonstrated his ability to be downright nasty.
You have no reason to believe me, but I ended up starting for my middle school team (yes, I am reliving the glory days! And no, I am not ashamed of it!). If Greg Smith ends up making spot starts in the Majors, there’s no reason to think the Rockies would be in bad shape either.
