Hoop Dreams, Mercedes Baller (Part 2)

Okay, as I’m walking to the Bart station, I decided to blog an update on my Mercedes 300sd (blogging while walking is blalking, right?). So, I’m blalking down the street and I’m thinking I’m-so-cool, and then I remember how uncool the whole owning a Mercedes-Benz experience has been. Really the un-Benz experience, but that’s okay. My car and I have been through harder, scarier times than this. For sure.

As I’m passing the closing-everything-must-go Hollywood Video, I see a white, VW Thing idling in the parking lot with an elderly man at the wheel, hunched over. I immediately think he might be asleep, snoring like his flat four.

The air-cooled VW is such an easy car to maintain and drive because of its simplicity: there’s no power anything, it’s light and nimble around corners, and since I first learned to drive stick in my uncle’s 60’s beetle, mistakenly put diesel in the tank and choked the engine, and ran the tank dry of petrol another time due to a misleading fuel tank level, it now sits at the curb with a dead fuel pump, beautifully stationary. The “folks wagen” will live again, someday.

Beyond these experiences, the W126, 5-cylinder diesel had quite the bumpy ride with me; upon purchase, my intent was to be a DIYer, and the first attempt to replace the sunken engine mounts had caused a chain reaction unimaginable to me, and if I did imagine it, it would have been a blessing. Upon stripping an allen head bolt covered with gunk, I double stacked the new mounts under the old, leaving the engine raised nearly two inches, and could not completely close the hood. Now here is where a proclaimed DIYer jumps on the free way, thinking the steel hood is heavier than the air pressure attempting to fill the engine compartment at free way speeds. Did I mention this was after sunset, in the dark?

The sound was as ravaging as the sound effects for fuselage dismemberment; there was a loud bang, and then a sheer spike of adrenaline entered my bloodstream. I found myself staring into the hood, which had fully lifted and bent backwards onto the roof, like it was a Marilyn Monroe reveal (BTW, Oakland Coliseum Bart parking lot was just host to a Mustang 5.0 burnout, which I have neither the guts nor money to melt my tires for such a show; now back to our scheduled programming…).
