My grade two students live for games. They like me just fine, and are generally willing to put up with getting all kinds of learning stuffed in their ears with the promise that very shortly, we will play a game, possibly two. My family had a dog that would hang on your every word waiting for key words that meant good things – cookie, treat, walk, Saturday – and would get really excited even if you were talking on the phone and happened to mention Saturday in passing; my students do the same thing with “game”. If I talk about playing board games with other foreigners downtown, they all leap up and clamour to play a game.
I’m still combing the internet for new and exciting games to play, so I’ll update as I discover new goodies.
Context: my grade two class consists of eight students. If your class is bigger than 10, I would suggest dividing it in half for some of these games (if you have forty kids, I am so, so sorry, but there is not much anyone can do to help you).В Their classroom has a fair bit of space, on account of only having eight desks in it, but we usually just use the back part of the room and don’t bother moving desks, so if all of your kids can sit in a circle in your space with the desks moved, you’re probably okay.
Flashcard games
Flashcards are great tools for games, not least because you can print them off or make them yourself if there are none at your school. In fact, I recommend making your own (come on, you have tons of time of your desk for this!) as flashcards get easily wrecked during games.
Hammer time: Stick your flashcards to the board with magnets, in a grid or a random scatter. Split the class in two and line them up on either side of the board. When you call out the card, the first kid in each team has to smack the card; the one who gets it first stays, and the loser goes to the back of the line. If you have access to some big squeaky hammers, or even a pair of flyswatters, your kids will love it even more (I use hammers). If your kids are super competitive like mine, they will probably like it if you keep score. (A bonus to this game is that if one team is stacked with really quick kids, you can choose cards close to the other team so they have a fighting chance.)
