I recently began driving a 1997 Ford Explorer AWD V8, and I noticed by doing a visual pre-trip that the brake pads look extremely thin on the entire truck. Both axles use pads and discs, no drums. Since I can’t afford to have all the parts replaced, could I just replace the pads(since they are what need the most attention) or is it best to replace the rotors/discs at the same time? Thanks.
Of course. I own a 1998 Ford expedition, and I changed my brake pads just fine. I would recommend pep boys, or auto zone they usually have very reasonable prices for their brake pads. or shoes as they are called. The brake rotors (disks) should be replaced if they have a crack, or if they are bent or warped. Other then that, you should be fine.
a quick and easy test is to feel the steering wheel when braking, is there pulsation? If so replace the front rotors too, if not leave them alone. Is there pulsation in the brake peddle? If so change the rear rotors, if not leave them alone. I would how ever recommend rubbing the discs with emery cloth before you install the new pads, just helps the new pads set up and not glaze, not a big deal but worth the small effort to do it. I have replaced pads on badly worn rotors on my own vehicles in the past and while its not the right or optimal thing to do if you don’t have the money for rotors at least make sure you can stop.
