How often should I change brake Pads?
That’s the problem, Patel, no two vehicles are alike and some drivers get 80,000 miles on front pads and some get 12,000 miles and everywhere in between. The first check I make with a new car is at 30,000 miles, but later on when the pads are getting thin your forced to check them more often so that they don’t wear down to metal and damage the rotors. You can learn to check the pad thickness yourself if your willing to remove one front wheel and check both the inside and outside pads on the tops and bottoms of the pads. 3/16 inch thick at any point is replacement time in my book. You really don’t lose much by changing them 10,000 miles early because the calipers are better off when they don’t extended out as far as with new pads.
From what I understand, you only need to change the pads when the brakes get squeeky when you stop (in dry conditions… brakes do funny things when they get wet).
As for rotors, as long as you change your brake pads, you shouldn’t have to change your rotors untill they rust out. I suspect that you won’t ever have to change them.
If you like to brake really fast all the time, you may want to buy some expensive pads and rotors and will have to change them out more often. If you drive like me (i like to coast to a stop at the lights, and avoid stop and go traffic) you will have much longer brake life.
